David Hebertson

David M Hebertson | 1944 - 2020 | Obituary

David M Hebertson, beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and grandfather passed away surrounded by his loving family on November 8, 2020. David will be remembered for his personality traits and life work – such as a lifetime in the communication business, talent as a radio personality, skill as a public relations manager, sense of humor, and wisdom.

David was born April 17, 1944, to Susan Elmina Madsen Hebertson and Thorit Charles Hebertson in Salinas, California, where his father was stationed during World War II. Following the war, the Hebertsons returned to Vineyard, Utah where David lived during his formative years. David attended Union Elementary in Vineyard, Utah, Lincoln Junior High School in Orem, Utah, and Orem High School, where he graduated in 1962.

During his high school years (at age 15), he was hired by KONI Radio in Spanish Fork, Utah as a disc jockey. Approximately one year later he moved to radio station KMUR in Murray, Utah. The commute between Murray and Vineyard became too burdensome for a full-time high school student, so David obtained employment at KOVO in Provo, Utah, where he worked as a radio announcer through the rest of high school and his freshman year at BYU. He was called to the LDS Australian Mission in 1963. He served there until November 1965.

Upon returning from Australia he re-enrolled at Brigham Young University. There he met the beautiful Randi Layne Royce of Tustin, California, whom he married during his junior year in April of 1967. At BYU, David majored in advertising and public relations with a minor in chemistry, graduating in 1968. He then went on to earn a master of business administration degree (MBA) from BYU in 1970.

Following completion of his MBA degree, David went to work at American Resources Management in Salt Lake City as a financial analysist. Early in 1973, the family moved to Orange, California, where David was hired as an assistant controller for the Allstate Insurance Company. In 1977, the family moved back to Sandy, Utah, where David was Vice President of Marketing for a local real estate developer. In 1983, David was recruited by KSL as a radio personality. In 1994, the State of Utah Trust Lands Administration employed him as their public relations manager. He served there for 19 years, retiring in 2013.

He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in a number of church positions including: stake high councilman, member of bishoprics, stake seventy, high priest group leadership, boy scouts leader, and many teaching assignments. David lived by his favorite hymn, “I Believe in Christ”. His hobbies included investing, photography, cinematography, and collecting model trains. His greatest joy was his wife, children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife Randi, son Todd (Beam), daughters Shaunna (Pedro) Valdez, Tiffany (Mark) Madsen, son Matthew (Adrianna), 8 grandchildren Cameron, Quinn, Kayla, Rebecca, Thor, Jessica, Jacob, and Olivia and brother Richard Hebertson.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Thorit and Ella Hebertson, 4 brothers Keith, Leon, Val and Wayne and sister JoAnne Thomas.

He will be laid to rest at the South Jordan City Cemetery.

Twelve years ago I celebrated my 65th birthday with my best friend on the planet named David Hebertson.  Today, April 17, 2021, I am celebrating again as this would have been his 77th birthday and mine would have followed 3 days later on the 20th.  I miss him and don't know what else to say other than old friends are golden and I know I will see him again someday.  Our classmates should take this to heart with their true friends.  It has been a great ride for us all.
