Clarence Garn Schumann died peacefully at home on June 3, 2017 in Provo, Utah at the age of 73.

Garn is survived by his wife, Elaine Schumann, and their children: Kari Schumann, Larisa Schumann, Erik Schumann (Krista), Kirsten Schumann Hinton (Rob), Rachel Schumann Montalvo (Angel), Jacob Schumann, and Elisa Schumann Hamblin (Jeremy). They are the proud grandparents of twelve grandchildren. Garn is survived by three siblings: Ann Wells (Jim), Charles Schumann (Christine), and Craig Schumann (Jan). He is preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Olea Schumann and his sister, Norene Schumann Thompson (Evan).

Garn was born on April 10, 1944 in Provo, Utah to Clarence E. Schumann and Olea Pulsipher Schumann. He graduated from Orem High School in 1962. Garn served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Switzerland from 1963-1965. Ruth Elaine Christensen, his teenage sweetheart, agreed to marry him and they were sealed in the Salt Lake City LDS temple in 1966. Garn graduated from Brigham Young University with a BS in 1968 and an MBA in 1970. After graduating, the family moved to California, where Garn began working as a manager. His career centered on management consulting; he particularly enjoyed improving businesses and work situations for both employees and employers. 

The couple welcomed seven children into their home. Their children remember Garn as a kind, gentle, and patient father who encouraged them to pursue their educational, personal, and professional goals. Garn was a tireless romantic and demonstrated his love for his sweet wife Elaine in a million different ways; most especially by surprising her and snapping a photo.

Garn was blessed with a beautiful tenor voice and often sang in church meetings, as part of a choir or a solo number. He is especially remembered for his renditions of “Oh Holy Night” at Christmas time. He was passionate about serving people, either professionally or personally. He was an active and dedicated member of the LDS Church and served in various callings as a seminary teacher, a bishopric counselor, a high councilor, high priests’ group leader, family history consultant, and home teacher. He was a witty individual who loved killer puns. 

A funeral is scheduled for Monday, June 12, 2017 at 11 AM, Edgemont North Stake Center, 345 East 4525 North, Provo, Utah 84604. Friends and loved ones are invited to visit with the family on Sunday, June 11, from 6-8 PM at the Nelson Family Mortuary, 4780 North University Avenue, Provo 84604. There will be an additional viewing time at 10 AM, prior to the funeral. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Garn's life. Family and close friends are invited to the graveside service after the funeral, at East Lawn Memorial Hills, 4800 East Lawn Drive, Provo, Utah. In lieu of flowers, friends and family are invited to make donations to the LDS church perpetual education fund. The family would like to thank family, friends, neighbors, and ward members for their prayers and loving concern during Garn’s final days.
